If someone is diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis then they are having complications with the management of their diabetes. This happens if the body can’t process sugar, or glucose, as a source of fuel due to the fact that the body doesn’t have enough insulin. In this case body fat is used in instead of the sugar. The by-product of the fat then breaks down into ketones which then stores up in the body. Many patients seek an effective diabetic ketoacidosis treatment.

People that have Type 1 diabetes do not have an adequate level of insulin. This is a natural hormone in the body that converts glucose to energy. High levels of ketones can be poisonous. When the body suffers from these high levels, it is known as this illness.

Diabetic ketoacidosis could possibly lead to a diagnosis of this Type 1 diabetes illness. It can also lead to needing an increase in insulin treatment or injections. If a patient misses or forgets their insulin doses then it can lead to this if they already have diabetes.

If people have Type 2 diabetes they too can develop ketoacidosis although it’s not common. It’s typically caused by a complicated illness. Research has proven that people of a African-American and Hispanic origin generally are more likely to contract it due to a complication of their Type 2 diabetes.

Symptoms to watch for could include a flushed face, dry skin and mouth, stomach pain, fruity breath, rapid breathing or vomiting and nausea. Complications from these symptoms could eventually lead to renal failure, fluid build up in the brain or heart attack if not treated.

The objective in the treatment of this is to fix the high blood sugar levels by providing an increase of insulin. Also, fluids that are lost by increased vomiting and urination need replaced too. Patients and care givers need to be able to determine the warning signs and take appropriate and adequate steps in the home prior to the condition worsening. In the event the patient must go to the hospital, these steps are typically followed upon arrival.

The patient is hooked up begin receiving insulin replacement. They are also given intravenous bags of fluids and electrolytes. This helps to replace replace any loss of fluids that already may have occurred. Also, in the event there is an infection, it will be located and treated. These services are almost always provided in an outpatient setting and do not require an admission, or overnight stay in the hospital. There are also outpatient dialysis clinics around the nation that are staffed with highly qualified personnel that assist with treatments every day.

Another goal of the patient and care giver should be prevention. They need to learn to detect the early warning signals and symptoms of it. This can be done rather easily by measuring the urine ketones. This can provide additional data in combination with the glucose measurement device. Prevention can also be enhanced when the patient is regularly checking and monitoring their blood sugar levels. There are over the counter devices that can help to accomplish this.

Whether you have type one or type two diabetes mellitus, both types will give you similar diabetes symptoms that you need to watch out for. When you have either of these two types, your blood has too much glucose or sugar that it can handle. And we all know that too much is never good for our bodies. When glucose in your blood increases to a very high level, your body will start giving you different signs and symptoms of a diabetic patient.

When you have type one, the damage is in the insulin-producing cells or the beta cells because they can no longer produce the right amount of insulin to counteract high sugar levels in your blood. This is the action of insulin, and if it is lacking in significant amounts, the body will then start showing signs.

In type two, a similar story is present, except that the damage is in your cells because it is already developed resistance to insulin. Therefore, even though your body produces the right amount of it, it still will not do any good because the rest of your body will still reject it anyway. This results to elevated blood sugar levels that lead to diabetes mellitus.

1. Frequent Urination: If you have noticed that you seem to be going to the bathroom a lot more recently, then it could be one of the signs of this blood sugar disorder. If no other reason seems to have caused this–frequent intake of water or other illnesses, then it could be one of the signs you are looking for. In this kind of medical condition, since glucose is already up and running in high levels in your blood circulation, when it reaches the kidneys the organs cannot filter the glucose. They end up diluting your urine by adding more water and that is when your urinary bladder seems to be full all the time.

2. Tingling Sensation: This is also called in medical terms as a neuropathy, and it occurs in most diabetic patients. Since this medical condition affects glucose in your blood and your blood travels to different parts of your body, the rest of your organ systems are affected. In here, we are talking about your nervous system, where all kinds of nerves are affected. The signs are mostly clear in the extremities and are usually felt as tingling sensations. Although mostly evident in later stages, you can feel this if you are diagnosed with diabetes.

3. You are Always Thirsty: When your thirst seems to be unquenchable, you could be showing the signs of diabetic patients. Since your body needs more water to dilute your urine that filled with glucose, you could be feeling thirsty more often than necessary.

4. Blurred vision: This usually happens in later stages, but your visual organ system is also affected when you are diagnosed as diabetic. As explained earlier, diabetes mellitus is a systematic disease, so it can affect different organ parts including your eyes.

Do you have any of these signs? If you do, do not hesitate to see a doctor. Make sure you do not have any of these diabetes symptoms and have yourself checked before it could be too late.

Diabetes symptoms in men are a growing problem in Western civilizations. The understanding of what the condition is and what causes the progression of the disease is constantly expanding, but much remains to be learned before full control of the symptoms is possible. Below is information about what some common symptoms are, some of the risk factors for developing diabetes and some current treatment advances.

The most common symptoms of diabetes in men include constant thirst and constant hunger. The sufferer cannot seem to feel rested in spite of sleeping more. Frequent urination is almost always present. Cuts, scrapes and blisters tend to require more time to heal and infections are more common. A dry scaly rash may develop. It is not unusual to lose weight, even when there is no particular effort to do so. Eyesight may become blurred.

Understanding what the condition is will help to men to be able to recognize the symptoms, should they occur. The disease can be defined as a group of metabolic malfunctions. In men, there are two major types, Type 1 is a failure of the body to produce insulin. It is also known as insulin dependent. In Type 2, the cells of the body fail to process insulin correctly.

Type 1 or juvenile onset requires insulin injections. The body doesn’t produce insulin, which should in normal processing, be manufactured in the pancreas. It is the loss of insulin producing beta cells in the islets of Langerhans that is linked to Type 1. Approximately ten percent of cases are of Type 1.

Type 2 is usually the result of insulin resistance in the cells of the body. The reason for this resistance in not totally understood. Type 2 can be at least partly controlled through diet and medications. Ninety percent of cases are Type 2.

Risk factors are of interest when looking at the possibility of contracting the disease. If you are from a family that has higher incidence of the disease, you are more likely to contract it personally. The man who is overweight is at greater risk of contracting diabetes, especially if obesity is combined with not enough exercise. Diet plays an important role in preventing disease onset. Meals should be well balanced and nutritious. Finally, poor sleeping habits can be considered another risk factor for the disease.

Finding ways to treat either type is not concrete. Some treatment recommendations are dependent upon the type of disease, Type 1 or Type 2. Since Type 2 is much more common, it is fortunate that it is manageable with diet and some medications. Some risk factors, such as weight, activity and sleep are controllable. The man with these factors in place can make lifestyle changes to remove the risk factors from consideration.

Learning early signs of diabetes symptoms in men may help to prevent further development. Even if the disease is already advanced, it doesn’t hurt to make lifestyle and behavior changes. For example, increasing the level of activity is helpful. Bringing the weight into average or recommended levels through nutrition management can be helpful whether or not the disease in a consideration.

In general, diabetes symptoms in women are quite similar to those experienced by men with the disease. Women have both Type 1 and Type 2 forms. Women also have the form of diabetes that is known as gestational. It only occurs during pregnancy. It is important to note that the rate of occurrence amongst females has increased dramatically over the recent decades. This may be due to the fact that the risk factors for diabetes are appearing in larger numbers than ever before.

Diabetes is experienced when the glucose level in the blood is reduced. The basis and definition is a metabolic disease. There are three main types of mellitus: Type 1 or juvenile mellitus, Type 2 or adult onset mellitus and gestational mellitus, which manifests during pregnancy and disappears after the birth. Females from certain races appear to be more likely to experience the condition. These include Hispanic, American Indian and African-American.

Many signs of illness in females are the same as those experienced by men. Some signs, though, are more common amongst females. A woman who has unexplained loss of weight may have contracted Type 1 mellitus. Although the woman may be eating normally or even in excessive amounts, there is a loss of weight. The woman is unable to process the calories from food intake, There is inadequate supplies of insulin to process food.

Frequent urination is a well-known sign of the condition. The need for visiting the bathroom often is because your body is trying to rid itself of excess sugar that has built up in the blood. Secretion of sugar through the kidneys is one of the ways of assessing the presence of diabetes.

Women who are suffering from mellitus also excrete large quantities of water. Because this condition can lead to dehydration, there is excessive thirst. The combination of desire to drink in order to relieve thirst and frequent urination are an early evidence of the disease.

Along with excessive thirst, the victim of the disease is likely to feel constant hunger. This symptom is typical of Type 2 mellitus. The level of insulin in the blood stream is very high. This stimulates hunger and thus makes the victim want to eat more and more.

Those with the disease often has a higher rate of skin infections. Another problematic area is the increased number of vaginal yeast infections. This may also manifest as a higher than normal rate of urinary tract infections. The skin issues may make sexual intercourse uncomfortable, due to pain and dryness. Sensitivity in the vaginal area may be reduced.

Diabetes symptoms in women may be as much psychological as physical. Some of the more common psychological symptoms associated with the disease include agitation, irritability and lethargy. Women who are experiencing one or more of the symptoms may want to be assessed for the onset of the condition as early as possible after the symptoms appear. This will allow a treatment plan to be started quickly. It is particularly important if you are trying to control symptoms with lifestyle changes.

Diabetes can occur in young children as well as in adults. Normally, the sooner it is diagnosed, the better for the child since this can mean such a young one is able to get the treatment he or she requires. To help diagnose the condition, one is able to look for key diabetes symptoms in children that might indicate the presence of this disease. The following paragraphs of this article look at some of these main symptoms. After reading this information, one can be better able to discern if his or her child might be diabetic.

Something that is often a sign that a child might be diabetic is a frequent thirst. If the child is drinking all the time, and his thirst seems like it cannot be quenched, it may be an indication that the child is diabetic.

Constant urination can also signal that a child may be suffering from this condition. If this problem is present even when ones son or daughter is not drinking large amounts of fluid, this may be a point of concern. The best thing to do in such a situation is to have ones child examined by a specialist to see if there is any serious problems. Many times, it may end up being something else which one does not need to worry about. However, if it is a sign of diabetes, by doing this, one can help the child to get the treatment he needs as soon as possible.

When a child is young, he will naturally put on, and lose weight from time to time. However, if he appears to be losing weight abnormally, and has become very thin, one may need to check to see whether this is because the child is diabetic or not.

Related to the weight of a child, if he does appear to be hungry all the time, and it seems impossible to fill him, and yet, he is not putting on any weight, once again this can be a sign of diabetes. Of course, the child may be eating all the time because he is on a growth-spurt. However, if he seems to be eating excessively, as described above, and one is concerned about this, it will be worth getting him checked at the doctors.

When a child is constantly fatigued, and is complaining or appearing to be tired all the time, it can be good for the parent to get him checked. This symptom is a common one in many diabetic children. Thus, if a parent notices that his or her child is unusually tired, it is recommended that the child be checked by a specialist. This symptom can be a sign of type 1 diabetes in children.

Yeast infections, generally in girls, can be a result of diabetes. Therefore, if ones child gets such an infection, it may be a good idea to get the child checked as soon as possible to find out why the infection has occurred.

There are quite a few diabetes symptoms in children that, if identified as soon as possible, can help them to get the treatment they need. This article looked at some of these key signs that might help to indicate that ones son or daughter might be diabetic. The best thing to do if one thinks his or her child is suffering from this condition is to get the child to see a doctor right away. This can help ensure that the cause of these symptoms is properly identified, and further action be taken if required.

Diabetes has become a severe threat to health and early detection is vital to combating diabetes. Common signs of diabetic disease are frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, increased hunger, increased thirst and tingling of your hands or feet. Although according to the American Diabetes Associating millions of Americans have little or no signs at all, and therefore are unaware that they even have become diabetic. With a lack of guaranteed signs, the only true detection is regular diabetes testing.

The preferred method of diabetes testing is the Fasting Plasma Glucose Test, which requires 8 hours of fasting. After 8 hours of fasting a healthcare professional will draw a blood sample and send it to the lab, and then wait for results. This method of testing is simple and the most accurate, it’s important to note however that the test seems to be more accurate in the morning, however can be done at anytime of day.

Normal blood glucose levels will have a range of less than 100 mg/dL, milligrams of glucose per deciliter of blood. In the event that the testy results report glucose levels above 126 mg/dL, another test will be ordered on a follow up day to ensure accuracy. Should the second test come back with the same reading, your doctor will confirm that the reading is in the diabetic range and a diagnoses of diabetes will be given. However, should the original test return results within the 100 mg/dL and 125 mg/dL a second test may also be ordered, the glucose is within diabetic range but not quite high enough to warrant a diagnoses.

Pregnant woman are given an oral glucose tolerance test, which was once the standard for testing. The problem with the oral glucose tolerance test is that the accuracy is affected, by general health of the patient, whether or not they are on other medications and activity level. Even though this test isn’t the standard any longer, it’s still found to be the preferred method of testing with pregnant women.

Should a diabetic diagnoses be received, a Hemoglobin A1c test may be requested. The Hemoglobin A1c measures blood sugar control over a six to twelve week period and is an informative way to monitor blood sugar. This test is used in addition to regular home monitoring test.

Due to the fact that diabetics have been found to have kidney problems, urine test for diabetic kidney disease are often ordered. This particular test is merely measuring the amount of protein within the urine. High protein levels in the urine can result from albumin, protein leakage from the blood into the kidneys and can create severe damage and possible kidney failure.

For the most part all of the test are relatively painless and simple. Early detection can make managing and treating a diabetic disease a great deal easier. People live healthy productive lives with diabetes, when they have the knowledge of how to care for there disease.

Diabetic prevention is also a benefit of regular testing. If test results tend to come back a little higher than the normal range, a dietitian can prepare valuable diabetic prevention eating habits. The more knowledge available, the more equipped health care providers are for planning for their patients healthcare. Test sooner and test regularly, to ensure proper ammunition in the fight against diabetes.

Diabetic neuropathy symptoms are a family of neurological diseases from diabetes. People with diabetes, over time, can develop nerve damage throughout the body. Some people have no symptoms and nerve damage. Other loss of feeling and numbness, tingling or a feeling of pain and other symptoms may have pain in the hands, arms, legs, feet inches neurological problems, gastrointestinal tract, heart, pain in the bones including the genitals, can occur in your system.

60 to 70 percent of diabetics have some form of neurological disorder. Diabetics are at any increased risk of age and longer duration of diabetes can develop nerve problems.

Diabetes is a disease in which there are many things to monitor. Sugar levels must be controlled and the diet is one way in which that happens. There are many ways to manage diabetes and the issues that go along with it. Diabetics have to be very careful about infection and their immune system. Along with this knowledge it is important that they know how to choose diabetic shoes.

There is a condition call peripheral neuropathy. Extremities of a diabetic may begin to lose the feeling, especially in the feet. Because of no feeling in the feet, they can get cuts and bruises and injuries unknown to them. A sore or open wound is life-threatening to the diabetic. A shoe that does not fit the foot needs to be replaced.

Shoes need to be made special so that the person can walk and not worry about sores on the feet. Regular coverings for the feet are more fitted and tight to the foot. The special made diabetic shoes are wider and the best part is that they can be fitted with really comfortable insoles. Because of the sensation loss in the foot, injury is sure to take place. These shoes can have just the right distribution so that the weight will not affect the foot in an adverse way.

It is important for any person to have shoe material that breathes, but especially for a person that has this particular ailment. Breathing tissue allows for good circulation and eliminates many foot problems. To get the feet to a normal healthy status there must be the right materials in the foot wear. Sandals are a good choice because the feet won’t sweat and there is less chance of rubbing and calluses.

The toes should have plenty of room and make sure no cramping involved. If the foot wear pinch your feet they are the wrong shoes. The shoe should be big enough that an insole can be inserted and there is enough room so that there is no pressure. It is pressure that causes ulcers and creates the sores.

Prevention is the best cure. The way to create harmony with your feet is to treat them right. Clean your feet everyday. Make sure you gently dry them. Toes should be exceptionally dry, even between the crevices. Any problem and alert your doctor right away. Along with all the other things that you check, check for sores and blisters. If there are any, watch the progress and make sure it is healing nicely. Always keep your feet dry and supple. Lotion can be used in moderation.

Toenails should be neatly trimmed at all times. Try to get someone to do this for you as you don’t want to cut the skin on your feet. Good care involves not just clean feet, but protected feet. A nice pair of house slippers would do the job fine. Barefoot is just asking for trouble, so keep shoes on, even in the house. Socks that are completely cotton are a nice addition to the total well-being of the feet.

Shoes should be comfortable and give a sense of well-being when worn. Always consult the professional about your health and care of the feet. The advice of a podiatrist is always welcome and will give answers that you seek.

Diabetic ketoacidosis or DKA, is serious health condition that can develop in people with type I and type II diabetes. Although it may be more common for type I, it can happen in people with type II. It is very important to recognize and understand diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms, as it can be a matter of life and death. Here is a look at this potentially fatal condition.

Causes

If someone with diabetes does not get enough water, it may bring on DKA. During dehydration, the body goes into a state of stress. While in stress, your body creates hormones that break down fat, muscle, and cells in the liver for fuel. It also breaks down fatty acids. This fuel is turned into glucose or sugar.

When fatty acids are broken down, they oxidize and this turns them into ketones. This is a process called ketosis, where the body is using itself (and not the food you eat) as fuel.

During DKA your body no longer utilizes carbohydrates, it begins to burn fat for fuel. This creates a state where insulin cannot properly metabolize sugar. This increases the amount of sugar in the blood. For the diabetes patient, a rise is blood sugar can be disastrous.

What makes matters worse is DKA actually creates more dehydration in the body. Extra sugar gets into the urine, as the kidneys cannot process it. This makes a person urinate a great deal more and depletes the body of more fluids. Also, important electrolytes like salt and potassium are also lost. Electrolytes are very important for body function. Without electrolytes the heart cannot properly work.

Symptoms

Some of the first signs of DKA may be from the dehydration. This can cause a great deal of thirst and consumption of water. This is also followed by a great deal of urination. Someone with DKA may experience a lot of stomach upset, with nausea and vomiting. The nausea and vomiting can lead to a loss of appetite and no desire to eat. There also may be pain in the stomach and abdomen area.

It may not be unusual for someone with DKA to be very tired and fatigued. They may not wish to do anything but lie down and rest. Dryness is also very common, as the mouth will feel dry, and the skin may also feel like it is dried out.

You might notice a person with DKA to be breathing at a more rapid rate than normal. They may have low blood pressure, and it may be difficult for them to breathe. The heart rate may also be faster than usual. The person may become confused and disoriented, and there may be a fruity scent to the breath.

Treatment

Treatment is vital, and it is important to get immediate medical attention if you suspect DKA. In the hospital, they can deliver intravenous fluids with electrolytes, to rehydrate and replenish the body. Blood sugar levels can also be treated with proper medication.

Final Thoughts

It is very important to recognize and understand diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms, like dry mouth and excessive thirst. This condition can be life threatening. If you believe that you or someone you are with has DKA, get immediate medical care.

If you have recently been diagnosed as suffering from diabetes, you may initially feel scared, apprehensive, and confused. It is important to understand that this is an ailment which does not necessarily have to result in a serious impact on your well-being. For many diabetic sufferers, a simple change in lifestyle and diet can work wonders. In more severe cases, diabetes medications may be prescribed to help in combating the effects of the condition.

In basic terms, if you have type 1 or type 2 disease, your body will not be producing or recognizing the right amount of insulin to help regulate the body’s glucose, or blood sugar, levels. With treatment in the form of medication, diet modification, and exercise you can continue to lead a full and normal life.

When diagnosed as suffering from this condition, it is important to listen to the information and advice passed on by your GP carefully and diligently. One medication that is often prescribed for those individuals with type 1 diabetes is Lantus SubQ. Otherwise known as insulin glargine, this is a drug that is long lasting and works in a similar way to the insulin that the body would produce naturally, albeit slower and longer.

Another common drug use by diabetic individuals is Actos Oral, this is prescribed to those people diagnosed with Type 2 disease. In such cases, the body does not respond correctly to the insulin that is present in the blood. This medication helps the body to behave in the right manner towards the insulin, therefore helping in correcting blood sugar levels.

It is important to ensure that you are given the right medication, if you were not, problems such as heart disease, nerve damage, and gum disease can quickly develop. Do not change or alter the dosage or type of drug you are using, unless you are expressly told to do so by your local GP.

Medication in itself should form part of a holistic treatment program. Your doctor may also suggest that you make an appointment with a specialist dietician or nutritionist. These professionals will be able to tell you which foods you should be avoiding and which you should be eating. A balanced and healthy diet is one of the best ways to combat against the symptoms of the condition. If you were to eat unhealthily, your body will not be able to function adequately and the disease may worsen.

There is a growing number of diabetic patients who seek out natural remedies for their condition. If this is an option that is of interest to you, it is important to consult your doctor for advice before administering any supplements or natural preparations.

A common herb used by diabetics is fenugreek. This easy to source plant can help to stabilize blood sugar levels and also improves glucose tolerance and excretion. Another herb that may be worth trying is cayenne, this can be used to enhance blood circulation. Dandelion is also an option that can improve the body’s ability to combat the symptoms of the disease, as it helps in enhancing liver function.
